Cat has lived her whole life in rural Michigan and finds herself swept away in the experience of feeling understood when she first meets Marlena. Marlena offers Cat a bond she'd never had, connecting over Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell and their choked-down rage of growing up as girls of the lower class. Cat loses herself in Marlena's world, unknowingly inventing an idea of a person that neither Marlena nor herself really are. As the two grow older and the pressures of adulthood loom large, Marlena makes Cat witness to her own life's upheaval as she starts down a path all too familiar to those who have grown up in small-town America. Buntin articulates the experience of muddling one's own identity in a codependent relationship with haunting and insistent prose that's reminiscent of Elena Ferrante and Sally Rooney. It'll make you an instant fan.
