Poets in Conversation:
Elvis Alves, author of I Am No Battlefield but a Forest of Trees Growing
Keisha-Gaye Anderson, author of Everything Is Necessary
Reception to follow
New York City based poets Elvis Alves and Keisha-Gaye Anderson present their newest collections with a joint reading at Greenlight. Alves’s I Am No Battlefield but a Forest of Trees Growing is a meditation on the relationship between the life of faith and the affairs of the world—a world that appears more fragmented even with the promise of technology to bridge communities. Each poem in this collection calls attention to the black body—a site of resistance and celebration—using the language of survival. Anderson’s Everything Is Necessary is a conversation in free verse that alternates between the subjective, the collective, and the world of the ancestors. These poems assure us that, amidst the vicissitudes of human life, everything is necessary for one to truly manifest his or her highest self in this lifetime. Alves and Anderson will follow their readings with a discussion of their work and a wine reception.
